Traffic accident kills 21 in eastern India

CALCUTTA: A bus slammed into another vehicle on a busy highway in eastern India, killing least 21 people and injuring 40 others, police said Monday.

Surajit Kar Purakayastha, inspector-general of police, said the bus collided head-on with a tractor-driven carriage on Sunday on the outskirts of Calcutta, the capital of West Bengal state.

All the victims were aboard the bus, Purakayastha told The Associated Press.

He said many of the injured were hospitalised with serious injuries.

Rescuers used gas cutters to open the mangled frame of the bus to remove the bodies.

Deadly traffic accidents are common in India due to overloading of aging vehicles, reckless driving and poorly maintained roads.
